Dreaming of a multi-country Southeast Asian adventure? Get up from your sear and look beyond the airplane window, consider entering Vietnam by land crossing! This overland journey unlocks a unique perspective on Vietnam's diverse landscapes and vibrant cultures across the regions. Not to mention, the opportunity to visit the country you are coming from, too! Buckle up and explore the best possibilities of entering Vietnam by land.

Planning Your Land Entry into Vietnam

There are several things to consider and prepare for before embarking on your Vietnamese (and neighboring countries) overland adventure. Entering Vietnam by land requires a visa beforehand for most nationalities. Check with the governmental website to see whether yours requires one. Very important note ahead: unlike major airports, visa on arrival is not available at land border crossings. In this case, you can obtain a visa in two main ways:

- E-visa: Apply for an electronic visa (e-visa) online. This is a convenient option for single entries with a maximum stay of 30 days. Hanoi Fairtours provide E-Visa services, just let us know upon sending a query and we will send you detailed information necessary.

- Embassy Visa: Apply for a visa through a Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your home country. This option offers more flexibility for multiple entries and longer stays. But it will also have varying costs depending on the origin country. Please do careful research before choosing this option.

Land Border Crossings in Vietnam

Vietnam boasts numerous land border crossings with neighboring countries as it borders Laos, China and Cambodia. Here are the most popular (and arguably most well organized) entry points for land border checks:

- China: Hekou (Lao Cai) and Dongxing (Lang Son) are the key gateways for overland travel between China and Vietnam. As it is also important for small business traders to cross the border daily with goods, it can get a bit crowded, but there is typically an organized chaos to the entire process.

- Laos: The Dansavanh-Lao Bao border crossing is a popular choice for travelers between Laos and Vietnam. It connects the Lao town of Dansavanh with the Vietnamese city of Lao Bao. This foreigner-friendly crossing offers a convenient route for those journeying between Hue, Vietnam and Savannakhet, Laos.

- Cambodia: River Mekong Crossing (Svay Rieng) and Land Moc Bai (Bavet) are the primary land border crossings between Cambodia and Vietnam. Both of these crossings are used a lot by citizens of both sides. Therefore, it can get a bit crowded during peak travel times.

Benefits of Entering Vietnam by Land

Land border crossings offer a multitude of advantages over flying into Vietnam for the following reasons:

- Cost-effective: Overland travel can be significantly cheaper compared to airfare, especially for budget-conscious travelers coming from the neighboring countries.

- Scenic Journeys: Experience the breathtaking landscapes of Southeast Asia as you traverse mountains, rice paddies, and charming towns. Enjoy some rest and tranquility as you pass through.

- Cultural Immersion: Interact with locals, experience border town life, and gain a deeper understanding of Vietnamese culture when you take breaks along the way.

- Flexibility: Plan your itinerary around specific stops along the way, allowing for a more personalized travel experience. Stay a night or two and have a relaxing time, leisurely exploring the local neighborhoods.
